Responses to “Climategate”–the leaked e-mails from Britain’s University of East Anglia and its Climatic Research Unit—remind me of the line “Are your feet wet? Can you see the pyramids? That’s because you’re in denial.”

Climate catastrophists like Al Gore and the UN’s Rajendra Pachauri are downplaying Climategate: it’s only a few intemperate scientists; there’s no real evidence of wrongdoing; now let’s persecute the whistleblower. Time to Revisit Falsified Science of CO2

By Dr. Tim Ball  Monday, December 28, 2009 Climate science is a productive pursuit with Nobel Prizes, an Oscar, billions in research funding, massive tax grabs and wealth for exploiters. Continuation of these activities partly validated the claim the disclosed files from the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia (UEA) are of small consequence.

As I wrote earlier the scandal at CRU (Climategate) is diverting from the real scandal, which is the claim CO2 is causing warming and climate change. Climategate is the greatest orchestrated fraud in scientific history, but claims about CO2 are the greatest fallacy. We all know by now that the powers-that-be are hard at work to add the Edmonton Rexal Centre to the impressive list of covered stadiums fallen into disuse throughout the world that the Wall Street Journal put together.

Do we need to wonder whether efforts like the Bruderheim Multiplex will be added to the list?

The concern, of course, is that in the end it is only the taxpayers that must foot the bill for such white elephants by design, whether they remain in use forever or not.

However, wait a couple of thousands of years or so… such white elephants can perhaps turn into tourist attractions.  It worked out that way with the Coliseum in Rome, even though the debts incurred in operating the culture of bread and games became a major contributor to the Roman Empire’s ultimate collapse and demise.

The Copenhagen Climate Jamboree is over.

Many politicians claim that important agreements were reached.  Those that say so are predominantly from developed nations, while politicians from underdeveloped nations are generally unhappy that nothing in the agreements resulted in firm commitments for having the developed nations atone for their climate debt by transferring wealth from the developed nations to the under-developed nations.

The agreement that is being touted is in the main that,

• Future global temperature increases will be limited to 2 degrees Celsius.
• Initially, $30 billion a year are to be transferred to underdeveloped nations, with that amount of money supposedly increasing a few years down the road to $100 billion a year, so as to assist underdeveloped nations with the financial effort required to cope with the consequences of rising global temperatures and sea levels.

It seems that the Copenhagen Climate Summit did not deal with the vital facts that,

1. No thermostat exists that permits the controlling of global temperature fluctuations.
2. No floodgates exist that permit the controlling of sea levels.

Those are relatively minor shortcomings.  It is of far greater importance that, other than on the side-lines, at the Copenhagen Climate Summit there was a complete lack of any discussions relating to the causes of changes in global temperature trends.  Of even greater importance is the total lack of any discussion at the Climate Summit of the lack of proof that changes or acceleration of climate changes are truly man-made.

The 15,000 to 20,000 delegates to the Copenhagen Climate Summit had their minds firmly made up: the globe is warming, the warming is catastrophic, and it is man-made. No facts to the contrary could possibly confuse the delegates to the Climate Summit.

Nevertheless, all along, for years already, and increasingly so during the past few years, solid evidence had been provided by hundreds of credible and reputable climate scientist from more than 40 nations that shows that,

• While for the last nine years the Globe has been experiencing a cooling trend, the atmospheric CO2 level has been steadily and inexorably on the rise (the minuscule portion of which that is man-made is the alleged culprit of the alleged run-away global warming).
• There is no proof that CO2 causes global warming. While the absence of evidence is not valid evidence of the absence of proof, there is evidence that global increases in temperature precede global increases in atmospheric CO2. It follows that increases in CO2 levels are most likely not the only or even major reason why there have been fluctuations in global temperature.
• While the man-made portion of CO2 emissions is minuscule (0.038% of the atmosphere), it cannot be and has not been ascertained that it has a noticeable influence on global temperature trends.
• The global temperature increase of about 0.6 degrees Celsius during the 20th century is a relatively small and almost imperceptible hiccup at the end of intervals spanning thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands or millions of years.

Contrary to that evidence, the IPCC — the instigator of the climate hysteria with which the Copenhagen Climate Summit occupied itself — persists in intensifying the climate of hysteria by using biased, manufactured trends of rising temperatures that were undoubtedly and deliberately created to mislead not only the public but the decision makers who are trying to alleviate the manufactured public fears the IPCC had created.

The reality (of the climate fears that the Copenhagen Summit tried to address) is that what little global warming existed during the 20th century is natural, much less than temperature rises during previous warming periods even throughout recorded history, and therefore had to be greatly exaggerated, so as to enable the IPCC to manufacture concern.

Much of the main-stream media now states that the Copenhagen Climate Summit failed to produce a concrete consensus on what needs to be done to keep the feared global-warming crisis from happening.  That failure hardly matters.  The best solution to a non-existent problem is to have the courage to do nothing. Common sense tells us that we should not try to fix things that are not broken, but with the incessant and escalating propaganda fueling the growing climate hysteria, common sense went out the window a long time ago.

It should be of far greater concern that the Copenhagen Summit failed to provide proof that its primary concern, the fear of run-away global warming, is justified.

For a good number of years now, many bloggers unearthed evidence of temperature-data tampering with respect to many locations in the world.  John Daly (unfortunately deceased in 2004) was one of the earliest involved in those efforts.  Since those early efforts by John Daly and his collaborators, there are now many others who try their best to bring out the truth about the state of climate science, measurements and reconstructions (e. g.: Anthony Watts with his surface-station project and his blog,  Stephen McIntyre and his climate-audit blog, and Christopher Monckton of Brenchley at the Science and Public Policy Institute — check also this summary of the quality and impact of Christopher Monckton’s work).

The Climate Research Unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia (UK) is the creator and custodian of adjusted data used in support of the fears manufactured by the IPCC.  The CRU’s global temperature data (and the tactics used to bias that data) are an influential and controlling part of other important temperature data sets  — for example, those produced and published by GHCN (the U.S. Global Historic Climate Network), NOAA (the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and NCDC (the U.S. National Climatic Data Center).

On Nov. 17, 2009, evidence emerged that shows that the data tampering identified by John Daly and his collaborators has been ongoing for at least ten years and is endemic in the climate-warmist community centering on the IPCC.  The resulting climate scandal, dubbed Climategate, originated with the publishing of more than a thousand e-mails involving about a dozen climate researchers out of 26 or so affiliated with the IPCC.  The centre of interest of those e-mails and related files involves Phil Jones, the head of the CRU.  He has now stepped down, while a commission investigates the activities of the CRU.

The e-mails at the root of the climate scandal show a systematic and successful effort to fudge temperature data — world-wide, so as to exaggerate warming trends. Equally deplorable, the e-mails also show collusion in deliberate tampering with the peer-review process, to keep out dissenting voices.

The climate scandal served to intensify the efforts of many parties trying to create a climate of openness, transparency and objectivity in the scientific community using temperature records for climatological research. The climate scandal provided stimulus and motivation for critical examination of instances of CRU data-tampering activities.

The CRU tactics appear to have affected temperature-data records throughout the world.  Amongst the major areas of interest are the Pacific Islands, New Zealand, Australia, and Russia.  The links identified in the following will lead to more details on those areas of evidence of tampering with temperature data records.

Keep in mind that the temperature records identified in the following are all for places that are affected by the Urban Heat Island effect.  The “warming” shown over time for those records would be substantially less for near rural areas.

Keep also in mind that, although much is made of the decline in the number of measuring stations — world-wide, the decline in the number of the measuring stations is apparently mainly due to selections of desired-, and deletions of undesired-, temperature records made by organizations such as the biased Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia.

Lord Monckton barred from Copenhagen conference – pushed to the ground by security

This was the scene yesterday in Copenhagen. As you can see the scene is rather agitated with lots of police action, including use of billy clubs. As of this writing, no pictures or video is available of Lord Monckton’s account below. Hopefully somebody in the crowd will post some. I wish him well. I’ll also be glad when this conference is over. It has shown government at its worst.

New Study: Hadley Center and CRU Apparently Cherry-picked Russia’s Climate Data

Yesterday, the Moscow-based Institute of Economic Analysis (IEA), of which I am President, issued a study (in Russian), “How Warming Is Being Made: The Case of Russia.” The report, prepared by IEA director Natalya Pivovarova, suggests that the Hadley Center for Climate Change based at the headquarters of the British Meteorological Office in Exeter (Devon, England) and the Climate Research Unit of the University of East Anglia (CRU) in Norwich (England) apparently cherry-picked Russian climate data….(Full Story)

The IEA study identifies, amongst other things, that,

•  Russian meteorological-station data in the last 130 years did not substantiate the rate of warming on Russian territory suggested by the Hadley Climate Research Unit Temperature (HadCRUT) database…
• Russian meteorological stations cover most of the country’s territory, while the HadCRUT used data from only 25% of such stations in their calculations…
• The data of stations located in areas not listed in the HadCRUT survey often shows slight cooling or no substantial warming in the second part of the 20th century and the early 21st century.
• The HadCRUT database includes specific stations providing shorter observations and incomplete data highlighting the warming process, rather than stations providing longer and uninterrupted observations not demonstrating significant warming.
• The IEA authors calculated that the scale of actual warming for the Russian territory in 1877-1998 was probably exaggerated by 0.64°C. Since Russia accounts for 12.5% of the world’s land mass, such an exaggeration for Russia alone should have an impact on the IPCC claim that the global temperature in the last century has risen by 0.76°C.

The IEA report concludes that, “If similar procedures have been used for processing climate data from other national data sources, the impact on the rate of change in global temperature would be considerable….”

Judging by observations of similar falsifications of temperature trends in other areas of the world, all of which show that the Climate Research Unit of the University of East Anglia (and strongly related agencies — used similar tactics elsewhere in the world temperature record, there appears to be little doubt that the global temperature record experienced serious and deliberate distortions, with the aim to manufacture evidence of a rapidly rising global temperature trend.

GIven the recent melt down of HadCRUt in Climategate, and the mutual mantra of GIStemp is like HadCRUt is like NCDC so we all must be right, when all are variations on GHCN, I suspect NCDC via GHCN is at the heart of Climategate. So, when you hear NOAA or NCDC or GHCN, they are just organizational levels of the same thing. NOAA is the parent of NCDC and NCDC is the producer of GHCN. (Source)

We have come to know that Enron’s manipulations that came crashing down some years ago were firmly built on fraudulent energy- and carbon-trading schemes of the world energy market.  It was Enron-style manipulation, for example, of Alberta’s energy market that led to the deregulation of the utility industry and to the doubling and tripling of energy prices.

We have come to know that Al Gore, when he was the vice-president of the US, had been involved in promoting Enron’s manipulations, although he appears not to have raised his great current wealth from that involvement.  Nevertheless, we have come to know that he is not an uninterested party in promoting the carbon cap-and-trade insanity, as he has an active interest in that promotion and increased his wealth from about $2 million, when he left government services, to about $200 million now.

Now comes another astonishing revelation.  U.N. climate chief Rajendra K. Pachauri, too, is not an uninterested party in promoting the schemes for creating great wealth from irrational and destructive carbon fears. In the process of pushing his very personal interests in creating profits from the U.N.-promoted carbon fears, Pachauri, a railroad engineer from India, stands to make hundreds of millions of dollars for himself.

NEW YORK – Further examination of U.N. climate chief Rajendra K. Pachauri’s resume shows more extensive international business relationships through which he stands to profit from global warming activism.

WND reported last week A Mumbai-based Indian multinational conglomerate with business ties to Pachauri, the chairman since 2002 of the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC, stands to make several hundred million dollars in European Union carbon credits simply by closing a steel production facility in Britain with the loss of 1,700 jobs..

Now, the head of the Asian Development Bank, Haruhiko Kuroda, is warning governments that failure to reach a deal at the U.N. Climate Summit in Copenhagen could lead to a collapse of the carbon market. He says rich countries, therefore, should commit up to $100 billion to finance a climate deal that would benefit the developing world.
