Chinese-made drywall causing home and health hazards
A gut-turning smell like rotten eggs hit Richard and Partricia Kampf the day they first walked into their new house in Cape Coral, Florida, in July 2007. At first they thought it was some kind of “new home” smell that would go away quickly. Patricia bought some scented candles to help cover the odor.
But the smell didn’t go away and other strange things started happening. The metal coil on the central air conditioner turned black and then became so badly corroded it had to be replaced after just a few months. The mirrors in the bathrooms turned black. The Kampfs had to replace the motherboard on their computer three times and their son’s Xbox stopped working—after two repairs they bought a new one….([1] Full Story)

Update 2010 09 07: The US Consumer Products Safety Commission has set up a [3] Drywall Information Center that offers a large variety of information regarding the issue of the drywall problem, tests and remedial action.
In short, the problem exists, it is large and requires at times expensive remediation. However, one of the most important pieces of advice regarding the drywall issue is contained in a Consumer Alert by the US Federal Trade Commission: [4] Defective Imported Drywall: Don’t Get Nailed by Bogus Tests and Treatments, to which the CPSC Drywall Information Center established a prominent link on its home page.

I just have this to say; Having lived in Riverview, FL for 4 years, from 1998 to 2002, I IMMEDIATELY and ALWAYS noticed the “raw eggs” smell, especially while showering, flushing a toilet, running a load of wash, etc. Our well was over 290 feet deep. We had an iron filter AND a water purification system-whole house-and the smell was constant. When I would take a drive either West, to Gibsonton, along highway 41, north of Apollo Beach and see the huge phosphorus mine, or go east, towards ‘inner-central’ Florida and see the gigantic phosphorus mines and smelling “THAT” smell, it is absolutely just a part of living in Florida that the phosphorus (rotten eggs) you’re smelling, is coming from your water supply–even if municipal. The corrosion on copper, etc., is from the WATER. It has NOTHING to do with gypsum rock drywall.
Quit redirecting the blame and look just a LITTLE bit further. You may just find the answer is literally UNDER YOUR FEET! The state of Florida needs to finally get onboard with this. It was a MAJOR headache then and now…people are trying to find blame. It’s JUST NOT SO! CHECK THE WATER!!!!!!!!
