Man-made global CO2 emissions

Posted By Walter Schneider On August 3, 2008 @ 11:11 pm In Climate Change | No Comments

Al Gore is worried that 70,000,000 tonnes of CO2 emitted globally every day will cause a global meltdown.

Global warming alarmists assert that the CO2 content of the atmosphere has been steadily going up ever since measurements of that have been taken, but that is only true for the time interval since those measurements were taken in Hawaii.  In other places and earlier times, CO2 measurement data were collected that are part of the official scientific pool of such data but show that the CO2 content of the atmosphere was often much higher than it is now.

….The notion of low pre-industrial CO2 atmospheric level, based on such poor knowledge, became a widely accepted Holy Grail of climate warming models. The modelers ignored the evidence from direct measurements of CO2 in atmospheric air indicating that in 19th century its average concentration was 335 ppmv[11] (Figure 2) . In Figure 2 encircled values show a biased selection of data used to demonstrate that in 19th century atmosphere the CO2 level was 292 ppmv[12]. A study of stomatal frequency in fossil leaves from Holocene lake deposits in Denmark, showing that 9400 years ago CO2 atmospheric level was 333 ppmv, and 9600 years ago 348 ppmv, falsify the concept of stabilized and low CO2 air concentration until the advent of industrial revolution [13]….

The March 19, 2007 statement by Dr. Zbigniew Jaworowsky was expanded by him in an article titled “CO2: The Greatest Scientific Scandal of Our Time” (Spring/Summer 2007, pp.14 - 28, 21st CENTURY Science & Technology: ([2] 444 kB PDF file).

That article contains a reference (short version) to Dipl. Biol. Ernst-George Beck’s report on “180 YEARS OF ATMOSPHERIC CO2 GAS ANALYSIS BY CHEMICAL METHODS” published by [3] Energy & Environment (Vol 18 No. 2 2007), comparing “90,000 accurate chemical analyses of CO2 levels in the air recorded from 1812 through 1961. This record shows a remarkedly different trend compared to the literature of UN’s International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).” (Abstract: Sunday, March 25, 2007, [4] Beck’s 138 year-long record of atmospheric CO2)

The report (short version) by Ernst-George Beck presents the following comparison between actual measurements of atmospheric CO2 levels and the values presented in the the record used by the IPCC.

Update 2010 03 24: Ferdinand Engelbeen has [5] justified and somewhat serious reservations about the compilation by Ernst Beck.  He argues that in all likelihood only the minimum values compiled by Ernst Beck should have been used and that those do not vary much from the values measured in ice cores.

Still, let’s look at the CO2 data measured just in the last few years.  They show a steadily increasing trend.  Al Gore’s claim that on account of the increasing CO2 content of the global atmosphere the average global temperatures will increase is not true.

Correlation Last Decade and This Century Between CO2 and Global Temperatures Not There

While atmospheric CO2 content has been steadily on the increase, it is proven that [11] global temperatures have been falling quite a bit since the global temperature peak that was caused by the 1998 El Niño.

There must be something, as yet not even close to being fully understood by science, that causes the global warming alarmists to be so alarmingly wrong.

How much influence can the man-made contribution to atmospheric CO2 possibly have on global temperatures?

[12] Global annual CO2 emissions are 27,245,758,000 metric tonnes.  Al Gore is right about that.  It works out to 74,645,912 tonnes a day, but so what?  It is not a significant amount, but, rather than to beat that to death look at the important numbers in the overall context.

mass of some atmospheric gases

specific gravities for atmspheric gases

1) Specific gravity is the ratio between the mass per unit volume of the actual gas and of air.  Therefore specific gravity has no dimension.

It just does not make sense that a three-ten-thousandth of one percent addition per year to the global atmosphere should be a controlling factor in climate trends. One-third of one percent (for water vapor) is a far more likely factor for influencing climate or local weather, but which way would that go?

The problem is that the climate alarmists who promote the global-warming hype do not know, and neither do those who sensibly feel that the influence of atmospheric CO2 content is vastly over-rated.  If they did, either side would be able to predict the weather better than they can predict warming trends.

Most importantly, climate alarmists would be able to show a firm positive correlation between the CO2 trend and the global temperature trend that indicates that global warming follows an increase in CO2 levels.  However, the converse is the case.  Increases in CO2 follow temperature increases - lagging temperature increases by about 800 years.

We do know that Humanity produces CO2 at record rates but only an insignificant portion of what there is.  We also know that carbon is being sequestered by Nature at a greatly increased rate, perhaps at the greatest rate since civilization came into being.  That is one of the reasons why we have no global shortage of food, even though we now have the largest population of people that ever existed.  Some estimates I saw determined that about 40% of the increased volume of food production on Earth is due to the availability of larger volumes of CO2.  A good consequence of that is that a far smaller proportion of people on Earth now goes hungry than was the case a hundred years ago.

In any case, CO2 is being added to the atmosphere at more than twice the rate at which the atmospheric CO2 content is growing.  Why don’t the climate alarmists find out what it is that does such a nice job of removing more than half of the man-made annual CO2 emissions from the global atmosphere each year?

There is not enough CO2 to have anyone worry about it.  CO2 is necessary for life to develop, to exist and to persist.  Why mess with that?
